In the press release:
For more than 20 years, 3DMark has been the first choice for gamers to benchmark the latest graphics cards and processors.
Today, we take the “player’s benchmark” into a new field through 3DMark Storage Benchmark, which is a special component test for measuringSSD, Hybrid hard drives and other storage device game performance.
3DMark Storage Benchmark Introduction
Fast and modern storage means shorter loading times, less waiting for level restarts, and fewer game interruptions. PC gamers can now choose a wide range of high-performance storage options, from the fastest PCI Express 4.0 and NVMe devices to cheaper SATA SSDs and high-capacity hybrid hard drives.
Unfortunately, many tools for measuring storage performance were developed when HDDs were the most common drive type. Moreover, it is difficult to correlate the results of these synthetic benchmarks with real-world performance.
3DMark Storage Benchmark is a dedicated component test that measures the gaming performance of the fastest modern PC storage hardware. It supports all the latest storage technologies and focuses on actual, real-world game performance.
Game performance measured
The problem with many storage tests is that they use artificial, synthetic workloads to measure performance under ideal conditions. The results of these tests are difficult to relate to actual, daily needs, which is why 3DMark Storage Benchmark focuses on measuring real-world game performance.
Storage activities consist of input and output operations. When the storage device performs tasks, it is possible to record these operations. These records are called traces. The DMark storage benchmark uses traces recorded from popular games and game-related activities to measure real-world game performance, for example.
● Load “Battlefield 5” from startup to the main menu.
● Load “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” from startup to the main menu.
● Load “Overwatch” from the startup to the main menu.
● When playing “Overwatch”, use OBS (Open Broadcasting Software) to record 1080p game video at 60 FPS.
● Install The Outer Worlds from the Epic Games Launcher.
● Save the game progress in the “Outside World”.
● Copy the Steam folder of “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” to an external SSD.
Some measured data
3DMark Storage Benchmark is compatible with all modern storage devices and can test internal and external drives.
The test produces a 3DMark Storage Benchmark score as a measure of performance. Like 3DMark, a higher score means better performance. Below are some reference scores for reference.
