Doorbell cameras are both useful and controversial. They help tackle crime, but some, including politicians, worry they could record too much private activity. Others worry they could become police surveillance tools. Tesla cameras could cause the same problem in every parking lot.
That’s why Berlin police are trying to regulate Tesla’s presence near police headquarters or other police property, where recording devices are already banned.
An internal police communication said part of the concern about the security risks posed by cameras on Teslas and other vehicles is that video from Tesla in Europe would enter a Tesla-controlled server in the Netherlands. Police say Tesla permanently stores and processes surveillance video in the Netherlands, but the company has never confirmed this.
