Today’s results show that the service achieved a download speed of 301Mbps, making it one of the fastest speed test results since it went live. Latency, however, continued to provide more room for improvement, and upload speeds were nowhere near the strong download test results.
A Starlink user in rural Wisconsin reported particularly fast download speeds as no other users in his area were hogging the bandwidth.
The internet speed test result was shared by a user on the social media platform Reddit. Reddit user DullKn1fe uploaded the scores earlier today and claims he took the test in the early morning hours. The end result showed that his Starlink connection was able to deliver an eye-popping download speed of 301Mbps. Subsequent comments by DullKn1fe revealed that he lived in rural Wisconsin, in the northeastern region of the continental United States. This speed is also significantly higher than the average download speed for Starlink in the US listed by popular internet speed testing service Ookla. However, while download speeds in rural Wisconsin are impressive, upload speeds and latency, the time it takes for packets to travel to and from the user, leaves room for improvement. Tests showed that the DullKn1fe was able to achieve an upload speed of 20.5Mbps and a latency of 78 milliseconds (ms).
A study by Ookla for last year’s fourth quarter Starlink speed test was even more sobering, as it showed the median download speed in the US was 105
Mbps. Ookla also noted that the fastest median download speed achieved by the Starlink internet service was in Miami-Ida County, Florida, with a median speed of 191Mbps. The slowest was Columbia County, Oregon, with a result of 64.95Mbps. In statistics and data analysis, the median is the middle value that removes the influence of extreme values on a dataset.
The data also showed that the range between the highest and lowest download speeds in the fourth quarter increased by 30 Mbps or 30 percent from the 100 Mbps in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. However, in the same quarter, Starlink’s median download speed increased by 10%.
