Marko Lastikka, who has worked for gaming giants Electronic Arts and Zynga over the past decade, will be head of the studio. His experience in executive roles at these companies makes him ideal to lead Netflix’s new in-house game studio.
The fact that Netflix is still showing its ambitions in gaming, with new games announced yesterday and again today, shows that Netflix is serious about gaming. With financial conditions getting tougher and consumer spending down, the company is scaling back its non-core activities, but interest in gaming remains undiminished, and it appears that gaming is now the streaming company’s next core focus.
Netflix is currently focusing oncell phonegaming, but over the past few years the company has been moving to gaming video streaming formats, and since its core business is streaming video, maybe we could see it expand into game streaming as well to counter Google Stadia, Amazon Luna and Nvidia GeForce Now and more.
