“Looking at it as part of the entire mosaic, we can see that little groove in the rock with other rocks, fractures, shapes and other erosions,” UFO of Interest, the UFO revealer, tweeted on Wednesday. The features are spread all over the face together.”
Mars imagery can be tricky. An eroded rock may look like a fish. A backlit cliff might look like the outline of a face. Cropped photos and enlarged views can make tiny features look big. If the shadow happens to fall at a different angle, the “door hole” may be completely unobtrusive.
That’s not to stop the joy of discovering strangely shaped rocks and landscape features on Mars. One should absolutely revel in these peculiar situations. But perhaps most miraculously, humans have a wheeled robot zipping through Gale crater and sending photos back from another world.
