“You don’t give your big advertisers a piece of breaking news,” Musk said. “They [referring to the media] also know who’s paying them, and they’re not idiots.”
For this reason, Tesla may advertise in the future, Musk said.
“There’s an argument that maybe we should advertise,” he said, adding that these factors have made Tesla “free prey” for negative media articles and posts.
“The media is a constant stream of hate,” he said.
From 2017 to 2019, the media was flooded with negative coverage of Tesla, Musk said. “They’re looking through the thesaurus for swear words to use,” he noted.
Ultimately, though, the negative headlines didn’t cause the company’s sales to drop, Musk said, instead, sales rose.
“All news is good publicity, and that makes sense,” he said.
