Lee Jae-yong was born in 1968 and is the only son of Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Group. It is understood that Lee Jae-yong graduated from the Department of East Asian History of Seoul National University with a bachelor’s degree, and obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Keio University in Japan and a doctorate degree from Harvard Business School. In 2001, Lee Jae-yong served as the executive assistant of Samsung Electronics, and later served as the executive director of the business planning team; in November 2010, he became the president of Samsung Electronics, and in December 2012, he became the vice chairman. In addition, he is also the major shareholder of Samsung Everland and the actual controller of Samsung Group.
As the largest electronics industry company in South Korea, Samsung Electronics is the largest subsidiary of the Samsung Group and can be said to be the symbol of South Korea’s national industry. At the end of July this year, Samsung Electronics announced its second-quarter results. Data show that in the second quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics achieved sales of 77.2 trillion won (about 396.2 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 21.25%; operating profit was 14.1 trillion won (about 72.36 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase. 12.18%; net profit increased to 10.95 trillion won (about 56.2 billion yuan).
