Apple has begun negotiations with Samsung Display on the use of OLED panels on iPad and Macbook. OLED
iPad is expected to be launched at the end of 2023 or 2024, while OLED
Macbook was originally planned to be launched in 2025, but the plan may be delayed. According to TheElec report, for Apple, the biggest obstacle to OLED applications is cost and lifespan. Compared with smartphones, tablets and personal computers have a longer service life.
Panels purchased from Samsung Display and LG Display are trying to adopt a double-layer tandem structure to extend the life of the panel. However, doubling the emission layer means that the material cost has also doubled. In addition, this technology also requires TFT technology as a pixel switch, which in turn means that LTPO must be used, but this technology requires 15 to 16 masks in the production process, which further increases the cost.
Apple onYOU AREThe final decision on the panel application route will affect Samsung Display and LG Display’s next expenditure on equipment.
Samsung Display currently produces OLED panels for tablets and notebooks on its A2 production line, which uses a single-layer structure and LTPS TFT. If Apple decides to use oxide or LTPO TFT or double-layer tandem structure for its IT products on its OLED panels, Samsung Display will need to build a new production line.
LG Display can manufacture OLED panels for tablets and PCs, but its current capacity is very small, and it is said to be developing Apple’s plans for its 12.9-inch and 11-inch OLEDiPadOLED panel used on it.
