China’s spallation neutron source was completed in 2018 and has become one of the world’s four largest pulse spallation neutron sources. Today, four spectrometers of this large scientific device have been officially put into operation, becoming an important source of original innovation.
Located in the China Spallation Neutron Source in Songshan Lake, Dongguan, Guangdong, the spectrometer equipment that researchers are debugging will be used for the residual stress reliability test of large-scale high-end components such as aerospace and high-speed rail after the upgrade.

Zhang Junrong, Deputy Director, Department of Neutron Science, Dongguan Research Department, Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences:The debugging we are currently doing is preparing for the next user experiment. The material they made is a high-end bearing. It is important for us to promote a breakthrough in this domestically-made high-end bearing.
If the domestic high-end bearings used in aero-engines want to pass the appraisal and put into use, it is necessary to measure its residual stress and improve the processing technology, which is also one of the important tasks of the spallation neutron source. Since neutrons are uncharged and have strong penetrability, they can study the material properties under extreme conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, extremely low temperature, and strong magnetic fields. It has unique advantages in studying the internal structure and stress of large components such as high-end bearings.
Serving more than 2,600 users around the world, completing over 500 projects
Since China’s spallation neutron source was officially put into operation, the accelerator proton beam shooting power has reached 100 kilowatts, reaching the design target one and a half years ahead of schedule. At present, it has served more than 2,600 users around the world and completed more than 500 projects, including new lithium-ion battery material structures, solar cells, chip neutron single event effects, etc., and also carried out aviation materials, combustible ice, shale gas and catalysts. Preliminary research in the field.
The second phase of the project is about to start, and the spectrometer will be expanded to about 20 units
At present, China Spallation Neutron Source is preparing for the second phase of construction. In the future, the number of spectrometers will be expanded to about 20, and the target power will be increased from 100 kW to 500 kW, which means that under the same experimental accuracy, the data collection time is 1/5 of the original, and it can study smaller samples and observe faster processes, providing a more advanced research platform for cutting-edge scientific research, major national needs and national economic development.
