The continued shortage of foundry capacity in the global semiconductor industry has affected the R&D activities of Fabless in South Korea. This is because it is becoming more and more difficult to use multi-project wafers (MPW) for prototype production.Businesskorea reported that South Korean foundry Key Foundry recently announced that it will no longer provide MPW services to fabless companies starting next year. Nowadays, the MPW service of local fabs in South Korea is becoming more and more difficult to obtain.
It is understood that MPW can be defined as a foundry service used by fabless companies for product development. Using this service, the company can produce various system chips on a single wafer. Before mass production, the performance of the prototype can be checked, thereby reducing risks and costs.
However, judging from the current situation, the foundry production capacity is seriously insufficient, especially as of December next year, the 8-inch production capacity has been booked out, and it is difficult to book even if an additional fee is paid. Wafer foundries are trying to meet their orders by reducing MPW production lines.
