Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Earth Fund pledged to donate US$2 billion at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference on Tuesday to respond to climate change through landscape restoration and agricultural system transformation.Bezos said in a statement: “Our commitment today supports three imperatives-we must live in harmony with nature, protect what we have, restore what we have lost, and grow what we need.”
Earlier this year, Bezos pledged to invest 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2030 to tackle climate change, and the 2 billion U.S. dollars promised at the United Nations Climate Change Conference is only part of it.
Bezos’ fund plans to invest $1 billion, mainly for planting trees in the United States and Africa to better protect eroded landscapes and restore areas that absorb high levels of carbon dioxide. The remaining US$1 billion will be used to transform the agricultural system in an attempt to increase crop yields, reduce food waste, and encourage more plant-based diets.
