Amazon Web Services today announced the open source Babelfish for PostgreSQL service project. This project enables applications written for Microsoft SQL Server to work seamlessly with PostgreSQL.
The Babelfish project explained the wire protocol of Microsoft SQL Server, so applications written for the Microsoft licensed software can target the open source and free PostgreSQL database server. Babelfish supports Tabular Data Stream (TDS) and also allows PostgreSQL to understand T-SQL.
Although AWS is satisfied with Babelfish’s open source situation today, because it covers the commonMicrosoftSQL Server features, but they also admit that there is no 100% coverage, and there may be subtle differences in some aspects.
Those who are interested can learn more about this open source work through the Amazon Web Services blog. Today’s article is entitled “Goodbye Microsoft SQL Server, Hello Babelfish”, and on the new open source project website BaelfishPG.org.
