The new expansion, called Knights of the Mediterranean, includes two new civilization factions (as well as nine minor civilizations), a new game mode, historical maps, new achievements and much more.

The Italian and Maltese civilization forces introduced in the new DLC have their own unique play styles. Players who like economic warfare can enjoy the new Tycoon mode, which is characterized by the pursuit of more macro challenges rather than focusing on the battle itself.

The update also brings eight new maps with randomly generated and unique objectives, all based on areas of European history where conflicts have occurred. In addition, the developer provides a convenient diplomacy screen for players to temporarily form alliances or conduct trade negotiations.
